So what is vegeplot about? Its a little project in my backyard which I am excited about because I love home grown, organic vegetables. But its also a strategic move to try to reduce my family’s reliance on store bought food which I believe will become increasingly expensive in the future. With my training in horticulture and landscape design I am responding in the best way I can to the uncertain future of the global economy. I’ve been told once or twice that I’m full of ‘doom and gloom’ about the future of the world economy but I hope that this blog proves more than anything that I’m always looking for opportunities rather than misfortune and I’m proactively taking steps to prepare for the changing world economy rather than just complain about it.

I’m Nicholas Spies. 32 years old. In 2009 my wife and I made the decision to move with our daughter to Japan for what was initially intended to be a temporary stay. Our daughter was one and a half and we were both working full-time to pay the mortgage while we paid a nanny to look after the baby. We were a little fed up of the rat race and so moved to my wife’s native Japan where I have been an at-home-Dad while my wife has worked. Now that our daughter attends pre-school I have some more time on my hands and have turned to teaching English, renovating the house, gardening and studying through Curtin University.
